Connecting parents to Christian books for teens!
This is a list for parents who are looking for teen fiction written by Christian authors. (Teen fiction is typically called YA.)
YA is generally defined as ages 13+.
This list also includes Christian fiction written for adults but possibly appropriate and of interest to teens.
New Adult fiction is an emerging category, typically defined as ages 18-25. However, at the time of this writing, a majority of the content marketed as New Adult contains explicit sexual content. Therefore, we will use the terms YA or Adult.
Does Not Contain
All authors consent their books contain no . . .
- language that would be bleeped on live TV
- sexual content
- gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender themes of any sort
- extreme violence or gore
- quasi-spiritual activities that oppose the Bible (meditation, clearing your mind, envisioning your future, believing in karma)
Might Contain
- overt Christian themes and theology
- mild romance (hugs, hand holding, mild kissing)
- difficult topics (death, war and violence, mental health, substance abuse, interpersonal trauma, grief and loss)
- moderate action and/or battle scenes
- story peril
For all of the above, the focus is not to shock or horrify but to achieve a narrative purpose.
Does Contain
- All authors identify as some type of Christian. I do not investigate theology or denomination.
- Written from a Christian worldview, regardless whether any pages contain overt Christian theology
A Note About Fantasy & Magic
Fantasy books are included on this list. Some may even contain words like witch, wizard, spell, or casting.
I respect families who draw a boundary here.
However, mine is a pro-fantasy household. It makes no sense for me to prohibit these books because we read and love them.
I feel it’s a matter of genre worldbuilding. You can’t have sci-fi without spaceships, Westerns without cowboys . . . or fantasy without magic.
I will not recommend a book if the story goes out of it way to focus on real-life, pagan, religious procedures with significant and intentional occult undertones.
Happy reading!
We also have a Chapter Book Spotlight and Middle Grade Spotlight which follows similar guidelines.
If you encounter something in a book that goes against my posted guidelines above, please email me at amanda@amandatrumpower.com.
