Tell us about yourself!
I am an author, podcast host, wife, and mom of four wild, loud, adventurous boys.
Tell us about your book.
I write devotions and Bible stories for pre-teen boys, ages 8-12. Rise of the Enemy, the first book in my Dragon Slayer Bible Series, just released on Amazon in the fall of 2023.
Rise of the Enemy, a Dragon Slayer Bible Story, will inspire boys to join the armies of the Dragon Slayer in the epic battle of good vs evil. Through action-packed stories, inspiring scripture, and challenging devotional readings, boys will be trained to stand firm against the invisible enemy and to use weapons of warfare to deflect the lies of the Evil One.
What kind of child are you trying to reach with your books?
My book is for 8 to 12-year-old boys who love adventure, sword fights, and dragons. They also have a desire to read the Bible and know God better, but sometimes get bored with traditional Bible stories.
Give us a little flavor of some great characters or the setting.
Rise of the Enemy is part narrative, part devotional, and part Bible study. The events of the story take place in Heaven, before the fall of mankind.
Michael the archangel never expected his comrade, Lucifer, to rebel against the King of Heaven, let alone turn into a dragon. But Lucifer will stop at nothing in an attempt to overpower the throne.
Can Michael and his army of angels defeat the enemy or will Lucifer’s evil plan succeed?
What inspired you to write this series?
I have four boys, ages 7 to 13. I wanted to write a book series that would get my boys excited about reading the Bible, help them to understand God’s plan of redemption, and challenge them to become strong, courageous warriors in the Kingdom of God.
How did you know you wanted to be an author?
I started writing stories when I was a little girl, before I even knew how to write. I remember dictating stories to my grandma, who would type them out on her typewriter. I excelled in writing in high school, and I went on to study creative writing in college (also Spanish and Bible). After college, however, my writing life was put on hold for a few (twenty!) years.
I became a teacher and taught Spanish and ESL for several years. Then I got married and decided to stay home with our four boys. I ran a photography business for eight years, and I loved taking pictures of families and newborn babies. But in my heart, I always knew I would someday go back to writing. I just wasn’t sure when or even what I would write.
In 2019, I felt the Lord directing me away from my photography business to pursue writing again! Combining my experience as an educator and a Bible teacher, as well as my passion for the one big story of the Bible, I decided to write devotions and Bible stories for families. It wasn’t until a few years later that I solidified the idea of the Dragon Slayer Bible Series.
What’s one middle grade book you always recommend?
The Wingfeather Saga. 100% Recommended! My boys and I have been reading through the series, and we are almost finished with book 4. So many deep truths, paired with adventure!
What advice do you have for aspiring writers?
Learn everything you can about the craft of writing. Read books, listen to podcasts, etc.
But, if you want to be a published author, you also need to know how to run a business. Many writers don’t know this. Learn everything you can about marketing, publishing, advertising, and sales. You won’t regret it.
Also, make sure you let other people read your writing and give you feedback. Join a critique group of other writers.
