Meet Jan May, author of Isabel’s Secret, a book about a girl and her best friend who solve mysteries and ride their horses. Through this story, kids can see nothing is too big for God to solve.

Tell us about yourself!

I am an author of middle grade novels for girls and creative writing curriculum. I am a homeschool veteran and creative writing teacher who believes that given the right tools, any child can learn to write and love it.

I am a pastor’s wife of forty years and enjoy sharing God’s love with everyone I meet, either in word or deed. I have two grown children, two grandchildren, a husband, and a dog named Hunter, who is my errand buddy.

Tell us about your books.

My books were birthed out of a desire to glorify God. Each of my middle grade novels for girls 8-11 includes an example of Christian living with the main characters.

In Isabel’s Secret, for ages 8-11, Isabel’s motto is, “Winners never quit and quitters never win, for I serve the mighty God that lives deep within.” Isabel and her BFF, Holly, solve mysteries and ride their horses.

In Callie’s Contest of Courage, she and her family pray daily, live honestly, and repent when they make mistakes. God’s word is included in the family’s daily life.

Both books come with study guides for a more in-depth language experience.

What kind of child are you trying to reach with your books?

My desire is to encourage kids to reach up to God for everything they need and to have hope that nothing is too big for Him to solve.

Give us a little flavor of some great characters or the setting.

Isabel is a loveable tomboy who has a spunky personality. She tries many ways to become a lady with her friend Holly’s help so Gran won’t want to whisk her away to Boston for a school for girls. She always looks for ways to help others and has a strong faith in God.

What inspired you to write these books?

I really wanted to encourage kids who are facing crazy things in this world that God can keep them, save them, and help them with anything, no matter what.

Callie’s Contest of Courage was birthed from many testimonies I heard about soldiers being saved in battle. Callie’s dad is deployed, and her family faithfully prays Psalm 91 for him every night. During one difficult battle, she is inspired by God to pray fervently for him without knowing why. It was that day and hour his troop was saved from attack.

How did you know you wanted to be an author?

I was inspired by God to write to young girls in a fun environment and hook their faith. I felt that Christian books needed to be in the market with all the other junk out there.

What advice do you have for aspiring writers?

Join a writers’ group that challenges you to write and read others’ work. Writing can be done at your own pace. Never compare yourself with other writers.

Keep working at it! It’s like playing the piano. The more you do it, the better you get at it. Be willing to take others’ ideas.

If you love writing, that’s all the reason you need to keep going. Don’t give up! It’s a slow turnaround business, but it’s worth it when someone walks up to you and says, “I love your book and the chapter when . . .”
