Tell us about yourself!
I am the author of several faith-based, fantasy/adventure series for youth, including the bestselling Dragons in our Midst series.
Tell us about your books.
I have more than 35 books, so I will list the story worlds instead of the titles:
Wanted: Superheroes (3 books): Science fiction for ages 8 to 12. Spiritual themes, not overtly Christian.
Dragons in our Midst (12 books in 3 series): Contemporary fantasy, ages 10 to 16. Overtly Christian.
Starlight (7 books in 2 series): Other-world fantasy, one series is for ages 10 to 16, the other is for ages 16 and older. Spiritual themes, not overtly Christian.
Astral Alliance (2 books so far): Space adventure for ages 12 and older. Spiritual themes, not overtly Christian.
Time Echoes (10 books in 3 series): Science fiction, dystopian for ages 13 and older. Mentions of Christian topics but not overt.
All of my books have been welcomed in homeschool groups in particular.
What kind of child are you trying to reach with your books?
Most of my readers enjoy stories that go beyond the norm into speculative adventures. All of my stories have both male and female characters in highlighted roles. Most readers enjoy fantastical creatures and ideas, and they don’t mind some intense scenes.
Give us a little flavor of some great characters or the setting.
I enjoy displaying sacrificial heroism in all of my stories. I hope readers will be inspired to step up and be the heroes God intends for them to be in their own corners of the world.
What inspired you to write this series?
I wrote the Wanted: Superheroes series because I had no books for middle grade readers. Parents wanted all of the excitement that I have in my other books but in a format that is accessible to their younger children.
Since superhero stories were so popular, I thought the youngsters would like to read about young superheroes with more humor than I had in my other stories. So I made a young, genius boy who created a superhero device, and I made a sidekick sister who was quirky and fun.
I think it worked out great.
How did you know you wanted to be an author?
I started writing when I was looking for a way to teach writing to my children. Being homeschooling parents, my wife and I were responsible for trying to inspire our kids to love writing. I decided that a good way might be to write a story myself and perform a weekly reading to help my kids see how it is done.
After many weeks, my story grew into a novel, and I developed a passion for communicating truth through storytelling.
For a couple of years after that, I pursued a path of learning the craft of writing. Then one night, I had a dream about a boy who breathed fire. I brainstormed with my son, and we developed the foundation of the story that became Raising Dragons, my best selling book to date.
What’s one middle grade book you always recommend?
The Chronicles of Narnia
What advice do you have for aspiring writers?
